Your Career Matters: Feeling Stuck?

Stony Brook University; Career Center Staff PortraitsAs a career counselor, I often hear, “I feel lost and I don’t know where to begin.” No matter what stage of career development, this continues to be the sentiment when people have trouble finding the right career fit. It can be hard to find the right resource to motivate and move you in the right direction. During our last Alumni Book Discussion, we featured the book Life Reimagined: Discovering Your New Life Possibilities, by Richard J. Leider and Alan M. Webber. This book explores the process of getting “unstuck” when the comfortable status quo isn’t working anymore, provides a refreshing wake up call to those living life on automatic, and strives to inspire action by combining powerful practices and insights with online tools and exercises.
Here are three suggestions the book offers:

  1. Without doing the work, there’s no way forward: “If you can’t get out of it, get into it!”
  2. So, what does work? Having a map, working the process and being connected to others.
  3. Writing in a possibilities journal or using a talking journal will help you connect the dots, keep track of your thoughts, and enable you to see and understand your process.
