Tyler’s Top 12 Pics: 2023 Edition

December 14, 2023

Hello hello! And happy holidays! I can’t believe a whole year has gone by. For those who don’t know me, I’m Tyler. I’m an alumnus who works on the Advancement team, and I have the privilege of capturing many of the amazing events with our Stony Brook University alumni and donors through my camera lens.

There were so many memorable moments in 2023 and with that some incredible opportunities to photograph our generous community members both on and off the Stony Brook campus.

I feel fortunate to have a front-row seat to all the exciting things happening here at Stony Brook and to be able to now share a glimpse with you.

It’s so hard to narrow the year down, but here are my top 12 pics. I can’t wait to see what remarkable things we’ll capture in 2024!

Giving Day is a high-energy day filled with so many images of generosity from our students, alumni and friends. Watching Wolfie literally hold doors open for current and future generations of Seawolves is always a highlight. This year, we surpassed our philanthropic goal — and we hope to do that again in 2024. See more reasons why we love Wolfie!

This event celebrated the new partnership between the Valerie Fund and Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. The partnership allows the hospital to better serve pediatric patients with cancer and blood disorders and their families throughout Long Island by enhancing critical services, such as a child life specialist, social worker, pediatric survivorship coordinator and school re-entry coordinator. *(From left to right: Barry Kirschner, President Maurie McInnis, Sherlynn Canel-Estrada, Ed Goldstein, Sue Goldstein, Dr. Laura Hogan, Dr. Carolyn Milana, and Neil Yaris)*

The Stars of Stony Brook Gala is one of my favorite events to cover each year. I love capturing the energy of so many people who care so deeply about Stony Brook and its students.

The Grateful Patient Program is a way for the patients themselves to say, “thank you” and to recognize medical staff who have provided exceptional care. These three labor and delivery nurses were among those recognized this year. *(From left to right: Rachael Caplan, Izabela Slupska and Brooke Ellis)*

The Roth Regatta is talked about as such a fun event — yet I had never attended. I captured some amazing images of one of Stony Brook’s longest standing traditions, and I can tell you that I won’t be missing it again. The energy and spirit of our students as they raced through the green pond water was only matched by the more than 5,000 students cheering across the pond. — Roth Regatta is talked about as such a fun event — yet I had never attended. Having the opportunity to help break the news as our president announced the largest unrestricted endowment gift in the history of U.S. higher education— the Simons Infinity Investment — was the highlight of my career thus far. As I captured this historic moment for the university, I felt an indescribable sense of pride in Stony Brook. *(From left to right: Marilyn Simons, President Maurie McInnis, Jim Simons, Simons Foundation President David Spergel)*

As an alumnus of Stony Brook, I always love capturing photos at commencement. Being on the field with my fellow Seawolves in this new way is a full-circle moment. And seeing the graduates’ faces filled with pride as they share the campus with their loved ones is something I look forward to each year.

The expansion of the pediatric emergency department at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital is a two year project - which will create the largest, best-equipped pediatric emergency resource for Suffolk County. This photo captures four generations of the Knapp family, who spearheaded the philanthropic initiative for the expansion. — The expansion of the pediatric emergency department at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital will create the largest, best-equipped pediatric emergency resource for Suffolk County. This photo captures leaders from Stony Brook Medicine and Stony Brook Children’s as well as generous supporters of the expansion.

The Alumni Scholarship Golf Classic is another yearly event that I look forward to. I love seeing our alumni come together to reminisce about their time at Stony Brook for a great cause. And, of course, I love exploring the golf course with my colleagues to capture photos of the day!

Stony Brook University’s inaugural Simons STEM Scholars completed their six-week Summer Bridge Program, which was filled with advanced math and writing courses with non-credited workshops, team building activities and exclusive visits to labs across Long Island. I was lucky enough to join the cohort during their visit to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

After spending two months interviewing 14 endowed faculty members about their work, witnessing the Investiture ceremony on November 6 where they were officially installed made me so proud. I felt like I knew each and every one of them, and was happy to capture their special day in photos.

I love capturing the fun and excitement of Homecoming. This year, I was at the BLA UNITI Multicultural Brunch - which perfectly highlights the sense of community at Stony Brook. I just love capturing these moments of students and alumni celebrating SBU together. — I love capturing the fun and excitement of Homecoming. With all of the amazing memorable moments – it really is difficult to choose just 12. Check out the slideshow below of my honorable mentions to round out 2023.
