The Campaign For Stony Brook: More than $468 million raised to date

June 30, 2016 marked the end of year five of The Campaign for Stony Brook. Since 2011, more than 38,000 friends, alumni, corporations, foundations and others have joined to support our deserving students, faculty and staff, raising more than $468 million in gifts and pledges.

Over the course of the past 2016 fiscal year, gifts and pledges totaled $71.2 million, including:

  • $5.4 million for student financial aid
  • $15.1 million for campus life and facilities
  • $15.0 million for research
  • $33.5 million for faculty and academic support
  • $2.2 million for Funds for Excellence (Annual Fund)

With just 22 months remaining, $132 million will be raised to reach the Campaign’s $600 million goal — the largest campaign in SUNY history.

“Our compelling case for support provides meaningful opportunities for donors to invest in the future of Stony Brook. We are proud of our progress to date and are prepared for the hard work ahead,” said Dexter A. Bailey Jr., senior vice president of Advancement and executive director of the Stony Brook Foundation. “Completing the Campaign will take great effort, but our momentum continues to build.”

The Campaign goes far beyond dollars and cents and has a wide-ranging impact. For instance:

  • Nearly 700 community members rallied to donate $2.5 million to the new children’s hospital building, which will provide lifesaving, specialized care close to home. This initiative raised $5 million, thanks to a $2.5 million matching challenge grant from the Knapp Swezey Foundation.
  • Our highly-ranked Department of Chemistry is recruiting a new Materials Chemistry research leader to work on the frontier of chemistry, synthesizing new materials that provide global solutions for a future with clean energy, a clean environment and improved health, thanks to a new $1.5 million endowed Chair.
  • Providing access and opportunity for talented students from limited means is one of the University’s most pressing priorities. Scholarships and fellowships change lives, and thanks to this year’s Stars of Stony Brook Gala attendees, the University has $2.2 million more for student financial aid.

Just as critical to the Campaign’s success is the impact of donors who give more modest, unrestricted dollars to the Annual Fund for strategic and often urgently needed funding. These gifts also have a multiplier effect: They substantiate the high regard alumni, parents, patients, faculty and staff have for Stony Brook, which encourages corporations, foundations and others to give as well.

“I’m confident that under the leadership of President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. and Campaign co-chairs we will reach our goal,” Bailey said. “In fact, we have the potential to exceed our goal and do more for our deserving students, faculty and staff. Together, we go far beyond.”
