On April 27, dozens of students, faculty and staff gathered for a dedication ceremony of an originally designed outdoor mural, “HeartBeats of Stony Brook,” conceptualized and created by junior biology major and Scholars for Medicine student Naveen Mallangada ’17, and painted by Naveen and nearly 100 students and faculty volunteers.
He said the goal of the project, located at Circle Road across from the Life Sciences Building, was to “provide how student and community involvement can create something unique and bright in this location, which links the West and East areas of campus and is used by hundreds of students on a daily basis.
President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. said, “I think this is a great example of initiative at Stony Brook — a student seeing something and saying it could be better than it is — asking ‘Why is this not a welcoming place?’ and changing it for the better. I really like the idea of the conjunction of both the medical school and its emphasis on health and well-being with the arts and sciences on both sides.”
This is not Naveen’s first campus beautification project. In spring 2015, he initiated the beautification of Tabler Steps, gathering signatures and volunteers to repaint a major campus walkway to resemble the keys of a piano.
