Stony Brook University Remembers Friend and Longtime Benefactor Lalit Bahl, PhD

The Stony Brook community is mourning the loss of Lalit Rai Bahl, PhD, a longtime supporter of Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Medicine. Lalit died at the age of 82 on August 24, 2025.

Lalit and his wife, Kavita Kinra, have demonstrated a deep commitment to the Stony Brook Cancer Center for more than 13 years, including generous investments in research and state-of-the-art medical imaging technology necessary to improve and find new cancer treatments.

“On behalf of Stony Brook Medicine, I offer condolences to Lalit’s family,” said Executive Vice President of Stony Brook Medicine William Wertheim, MD. “Lalit’s impact has left a lasting legacy at Stony Brook Medicine that will be felt for years to come.”

The Bahls established the Kavita and Lalit Bahl Molecular Imaging Laboratory and the Kavita and Lalit Bahl Center for Metabolomics and Imaging, which have elevated Stony Brook Medicine to the cutting edge of personalized cancer research, diagnostic imaging breakthroughs and evolving individualized cancer care. These initiatives bring together Stony Brook researchers in metabolomics, cancer biology, medical imaging and computational oncology.

In 2023, the Bahls established the Kavita and Lalit Bahl Endowed Cancer Center Directorship to help recruit a world-class physician-scientist for the Stony Brook Cancer Center. Raymond C. Bergan, MD, was named the Cancer Center’s inaugural Bahl director and began his role on August 1. Lalit, along with Kavita, was also an active member of Stony Brook Medicine’s Advisory Board.

“Lalit was deeply invested in the Stony Brook Cancer Center, and we are forever grateful for his generosity,” said Bergan. “Lalit and Kavita’s impact elevates the center’s research endeavors and new discoveries in cancer treatment. We offer our deepest condolences to his family at this time.”

Lalit is survived by his wife, Kavita; his children, Krishna Bahl, Kiran Bahl, Ashok Bahl (Mary Przywara), Anjali Vij (Mohit) and Rajeev Kinra (Sonia); and his grandchildren, Lily and Ashler Bahl, Raveena and Devyani Vij and Anand, Siddharth and Meenakshi Kinra.
