The Stony Brook University Career Center was active last month, supporting alumni and the local community. June started with a three-part Recent Grad Retreat to help the class of 2021 with over 100 participants. The retreat covered preparing and managing a job search and preparing our alumni for an exclusive Virtual Job Fair for New Stony Brook Graduates and Experienced Alumni. Eighty-nine employers attended the fair, with over 900 one-one virtual sessions and 80 group information sessions. Recent graduate, Oluwaseyi Jimoh, shared,
“The workshops were incredibly helpful. Marie not only shared insights that helped in the job fair, but she encouraged us and opened up to us about her own experiences. Job searching/hunting is an emotionally draining thing, and the retreat and job fair were sources of hope, respite, and ultimately relief for me. The Career Center has always been a great resource for students, and I urge every student to visit sometime.”
Knowing that there was a need for support beyond students and alumni, the SBU Career Center collaborated with the Alumni Relations and Community Relations offices to support individuals who are facing challenges in the job market due to the Pandemic. In late June, they offered a special two-part event for job seekers from the local community and family and friends of University faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Marie Parziale, Senior Alumni Career Coach, welcomed 50 attendees as part of the event and shared resources and advice on various topics related to the job search. Participants left the workshop with a better understanding of how to brand themselves in the job search and stand out with improved resumes, cover letters, and Linkedin profiles.
Helping the local community and friends of the University, especially during this challenging time, was an important priority for the Career Center. Marie Parziale shared her thoughts after the events concluded, “We were excited to offer this support to our extended community of job seekers and share what action steps they need to take as they continue their job search. In addition, it was wonderful to collaborate with the Alumni Relations and Community Relations offices to sponsor such a beneficial event. Connecting with and supporting our community members and helping them see a pathway to success is what made the event even more meaningful.”
As the Career Center prepares for the start of the new semester, they will continue to offer support to our alumni through workshops, group chats, drop-ins, one-one appointments, and job fairs. In addition, students and alumni can check the alumni relations calendar for the weekly dates and times for drop-in hours, group support and upcoming events and workshops, and Handshake to make a one-one appointment.
