Stony Brook Hosts 2024 ASCE Metropolitan Student Symposium

Stony Brook University’s student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers hosted the 2024 ASCE Metropolitan Student Symposium April 12-14, proudly representing SBU and the Department of Civil Engineering.

The event had a great turnout, with approximately 270 attendees from 13 universities in New Jersey and New York. There were various design team competitions such as Steel Bridge, Concrete Canoe, Land Surveying, 3D Printing, and Construction Institute. The symposium also had several professional events such as Pop-Up Workshops facilitated by ASCE professional members and a networking event with donors.

Stony Brook participated in five competitions including the Symposium Paper, its most ever. While SBU has participated in the concrete canoe competition for years, this was our chapter’s second year participating in the steel bridge competition and the first year participating in the Land Surveying and Construction Institute competitions.

SBU earned the most awards it has ever won at the symposium, achieving Overall 1st Place in the Land Surveying competition, Overall 2nd Place in the Construction Institute competition, Overall 3rd Place in Concrete Canoe, and Most Improved in the Steel Bridge competition! Additionally, the SBU chapter received an honorable mention for the New York State Council 2023 ASCE Student Chapter Award in Memory of Otto W. Maatsch.
