Stony Brook Football Runs Past Sacred Heart in Home Opener

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – With 294 rushing yards, the Stony Brook football team ran past visiting Sacred Heart in the 2017 home opener of Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium in a 45-7 non-conference victory on Saturday night.

The Seawolves (2-1) had six different players score a touchdown, including running backs Stacey Bedell(Mastic Beach, N.Y.) and Bedell’s second cousin Jordan Gowins (Bellport, N.Y.), while QB Joe Carbone (Wethersfield, Conn.) tossed a career-high three scores to three different receivers, including junior WR Donavin Washigton’s (Glendora, Calif.)first career touchdown in the second quarter.

Stony Brook’s special teams scored its second touchdown of the season on the fifth blocked punt for a touchdown in the past 15 games. Redshirt freshman DB EJ Fineran (Bethlehem, Pa.) blocked Sacred Heart’s (2-1) second punt attempt of the game in the first quarter and freshman WR Seba Nekhet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) fell on it in the end zone.

The defense also came up big in the Seawolves’ second straight victory. Stony Brook held SHU, who entered the game averaging 40.0 points per game, to just seven point and 206 yards of total offense.
