For Long Island children with serious kidney disorders, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital is the hospital of choice. U.S. News & World Report ranked Stony Brook Children’s among the top 50 providers for nephrology in the new 2014-15 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings.
The Division of Pediatric Nephrology at Stony Brook Children’s is the only nephrology service in Suffolk and Nassau counties that can manage the full spectrum of pediatric kidney disease, including advanced treatment such as renal transplants for children. Home to one of the largest pediatric nephrology programs on Long Island, Stony Brook Children’s sees approximately 1,400 nephrology patients annually. Special services include the Hypertension Center, which brings key pediatric specialists together under one roof to discuss emerging or existing hypertension issues in children.
The U.S. News scores are based on patient outcomes, care-related resources available, a clinical questionnaire to 183 pediatric hospitals and a survey of 450 pediatric specialists and subspecialists. In the area of nephrology, survival following kidney transplant, biopsy complications and overall infection prevention were among the kinds of data collected.
