Stony Brook Announces New Plan for Equity, Inclusion and Diversity

Stony Brook’s newly revised Plan for Equity, Inclusion and Diversity is final, and with it, the University reaches a new level in enhancing diversity and fostering a more inclusive community on campus.

Building this plan was a community effort. In March, all Stony Brook students, faculty and staff were invited to share feedback on a draft plan. More than 120 thoughtful suggestions were received, and served a crucial role in developing a comprehensive plan.

Implementing the plan will involve the Stony Brook community as well. Campus leaders and representatives from various areas of the University form a steering committee, an advisory council and several working groups. These groups include students, faculty and staff, and will meet regularly to put the plan into action.

The plan identifies four main goals:

  • Improve the diversity of the Stony Brook community through enhanced recruitment and retention.
  • Expand educational, research, healthcare and other efforts to ensure that Stony Brook students have the ability to thrive as members of the campus community and as global citizens in a diverse society.
  • Support the development of a campus climate that values diversity, equity and inclusion in a way that promotes the ability of members of the community to thrive and to achieve their individual goals.
  • Establish a culture of accountability and assessment around diversity and inclusion initiatives and policies.
