When golfers hit the green at Huntington Country Club on June 24, it was about more than playing a great game.
Under blue skies, 144 golfers, sponsors, alumni and friends gathered to raise money for student scholarships at the Alumni Association’s Annual Scholarship Golf Classic. In another record-breaking year, the Classic raised more than $155,000 for student scholarships, topping the previous year’s total for the seventh consecutive year.
“As I witness the tremendous trajectory that the Scholarship Golf Classic has experienced since its inception, I am exceptionally proud of our growing community of alumni, friends and sponsors, who continue to prove their steadfast dedication to future generations of Seawolves,” said Matthew Colson, Executive Director of Alumni Relations.
It’s important to me to support promising students to give them the same experience I had at Stony Brook,” said alumnus David Rothenberg ‘91. “The Golf Outing also allows my colleagues to gather together for the day outside of work and our busy schedules to enjoy a round of golf at a nice course with exceptional weather always, somehow.”

After a great day of golf, it all came back to the students, when Aishah Scott, a History Doctoral Candidate at Stony Brook, earned a robust round of applause as she accepted the Life Member Graduate Student Award. A dedicated member of the campus community, Scott has performed vital research, served as a student mentor and recently successfully defended her doctoral thesis in History.
Since its inception, the Scholarship Golf Classic has supported over 350 students. This year alone, 20 Dean’s Choice Awards, 9 student awards and two half-tuition scholarships were distributed by the Alumni Association.
“This scholarship has boosted my self confidence in school and my sport and I greatly appreciate what you’ve done to help me,” said Student-Athlete Alumni Award Recipient, Taryn Ohlmiller.  “I am now encouraged to pay it forward in the future by helping the next generation of student-athletes and giving back to the community.”
