Sharon Nachman, MD ’83

2004 Distinguished Alumni Award

Sharon A. Nachman, MD is a Professor of Pediatrics and the Division Chief for Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Stony Brook University. Her other titles include the Director of Maternal Child HIV Care Center at Stony Brook and the Director of the Pediatric ID fellowship at Stony Brook. She completed her residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and has board certification in Pediatrics and Pediatric Infectious Diseases. She serves on many committees and professional societies and has lectured around the world.

Widely published, Dr. Nachman has more than 115 publications that include original articles, abstracts, treatment guidelines, book chapters and four books on Pediatric Infectious Diseases. Dr. Nachman’s special interests include: Pediatric HIV: Pneumococcal diseases, TB: Vaccine clinical trials, and Lyme disease.

Dr. Nachman has been the recipient of numerous academic and professional awards. Some of these include: American Medical Women’s Association’s Changing the Face of Medicine: Local Legends Award in 2003, and the Excellence in Teaching Pediatric Residents at Stony Brook University for 2001, 2002, and 2003.

In 1997, Stony Brook University President Shirley Strum Kenny presented Dr. Nachman with the Distinguished Alumni Award for Stony Brook University and in 1996 she received the Three Village Woman of the Year in Medicine Award which followed the Brookhaven Town Woman of the Year in Medicine Award in 1993.

Her academic career was evident even while she was in college when she received the Louis Rover Prize in Biochemistry and honors in Chemistry and Biochemistry at CUNY.

Dr. Nachman then went on to be the recipient of the Pediatric Resident Teaching Award at Long Island Jewish Hospital, and after completing her residency Dr. Nachman was awarded a Pediatric Scientist Training Fellowship from the Association of Medical School Pediatric Chairman.

For her accomplishments in professional development, research and community service and for her commitment to Stony Brook University School of Medicine, we proudly honor Dr. Sharon A. Nachman with a 2004 Distinguished Alumni Award.
