The Stony Brook University women’s lacrosse team’s quest for an eighth consecutive America East Conference tournament championship kicks off May 6, when the Seawolves host University of Maryland-Baltimore County in the semifinals at 3:30 pm at LaValle Stadium.
The Seawolves are ranked sixth in the nation in NCAA Division I and will host all three games of the tournament. Complimentary tickets to the two May 6 semifinal games and the championship game on May 8 are available on the team website.
Stony Brook’s prowess on the field has drawn the attention of The New York Times, which published an extensive feature on the team on May 5. The story highlights the team’s incredible success under head coach Joe Spallina, who has built a team featuring a majority of players from Long Island.
The Seawolves roll into the conference tournament on a 52-game conference winning streak that stretches back to 2014. The streak is the second-longest in the NCAA, behind only the Oklahoma softball team with 65 straight Big 12 Conference victories.
Stony Brook is led by All-American midfielder Ally Kennedy (52 goals) and attack Taryn Ohlmiller, who has 34 goals and 37 assists, which is ninth-best in the country. Ohlmiller missed the school’s single-game scoring record by one when she tallied eight in an 18-7 win over UMBC on May 2.
Kennedy was recently named one of 25 nominees for the Tewaaraton Award, which annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse players in the United States.
