SBU School of Medicine Names Douglas S. Katz 2012 Distinguished Alumnus

August 28, 2012 – Stony Brook University School of Medicine recognized Douglas S. Katz, MD, FACR., ’90, a leader in the field of clinical radiology and medical education, as its 2012 Distinguished Alumnus. Dr. Katz received his award during the School’s traditional “White Coat” ceremony.

Dr. Katz is Director of Body Imaging and Vice Chair for Clinical Research and Education at Winthrop-University Hospital, and Professor of Clinical Radiology at Stony Brook University School of Medicine. An educator at the School of Medicine since August 2006, Dr. Katz has trained undergraduates and residents in radiology and imaging.
“Dr. Katz is an icon in the field of radiology,” said Dr. Patrice Vorwerk, ’86, a fellow radiologist at Winthrop who nominated Dr. Katz for the award. “He is a true role model to students, residents, and other physicians. His broad knowledge, keen clinical skills, and stellar diagnostic and interpretive capabilities stand alone.”
“Dr. Katz always strives for perfection, is highly ethical, and his life-long learning continues to inspire and motivate,” said Elaine S. Gould, MD, FACR, Professor of Clinical Radiology and Orthopedic Surgery, Chief of Musculoskeletal Radiology, Director of the Core Diagnostic Radiology Division & Outpatient Imaging Center, and Program Director of the Musculoskeletal Radiology Fellowship, SBU School of Medicine, who presented the award to Dr. Katz. “He embodies and exemplifies what it means to be a true clinical educator.”
Among his many career accomplishments, Dr. Katz was named Attending Physician-of-the-Year five times at Winthrop-University Hospital – three times in Radiology and twice in Internal Medicine. He is involved in multiple regional, national, and international radiology organizations, where he has held numerous leadership roles, in particular with the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), the American Roentgen Ray Society, and the American Society of Emergency Radiology. He is also Past President of the Long Island Radiological Society.
Dr. Katz has given 110 regional and national lectures on a variety of imaging-related topics, co-authored 597 publications and abstracts, as well as two books. Named the RSNA’s Editorial Fellow in 1999, Dr. Katz has served in various editorial capacities for the American Journal of Roentgenology (AJR) and Radiology, the lead journal in his field. From 2002 to 2008, Dr. Katz was one of three Deputy Editors of Radiology.
Dr. Katz received his MD from Stony Brook University School of Medicine and his BS in Biological Sciences from Harpur College of Arts and Sciences, State University of New York at Binghamton. He is a resident of North Hills, NY.
