Stony Brook University has been named a Fulbright U.S. Student Program Top Producing Institution for the 2022-2023 academic year, the second time in three years that Stony Brook has been so honored.

The Fulbright Top Producing Institutions for 2022-2023 were announced in the online edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education on February 10, and on the Fulbright program website.

The Fulbright U.S. Scholar and Fulbright U.S. Student Programs are sponsored by the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to support academic exchanges between the United States and over 150 countries around the world. The program is a highly competitive scholarship opportunity that provides funding for American students to conduct research or teach English overseas.

“The fact that Stony Brook has again been designated a Fulbright Top Producer points to the excellence of our students across a range of disciplines,” said Celia Marshik, interim dean of the Graduate School. “Whether they received the English Teaching Assistant or Research Award, our current students and alumni are well poised to take advantage of the incredible opportunities Fulbright offers.”

“As a former Fulbrighter myself, I am excited to have joined an institution that values cultural exchange and encourages Stony Brook students across all disciplines to pursue international research and teaching opportunities through the Fulbright program,” said Ashley Staples, director for external fellowships. “I’m looking forward to guiding our next round of applicants through summer advising, kicking off this April.”

In 2022, a record number of 14 Stony Brook University students were recognized by the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, earning Stony Brook its highest-ever ranking among top Student Program producers.

“This group of recipients will always be near and dear to me,” said Jennifer Green, formerly director for Fellowships Advising and Professional Development at the Graduate School. “In addition to being exceptionally hard working and talented, they were the last group I had the honor of working with before taking a position at the University of Texas at El Paso. I am incredibly proud of them and the legacy we’ve left for SBU to build upon.”

“On behalf of President Biden and Secretary of State Blinken, congratulations to the colleges and universities recognized as 2022-2023 Fulbright Top Producing Institutions, and to all the applicants who were selected for the Fulbright Program this year,” said Lee Satterfield, Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs. “Thanks to the visionary leadership of these institutions, administrators, and advisors, a new generation of Fulbrighters — changemakers, as I like to say — will catalyze lasting impact on their campus, in their communities, and around the world.”

In his congratulatory letter to President Maurie McInnis, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said, “Stony Brook University’s place among the Fulbright Program’s 2022–2023 Top Producing Institutions clearly demonstrates your dedication to preparing Americans to thrive in the global economy and serve as engaged citizens.”

A reception celebrating the top institutions will take place on February 21 in Washington, D.C., coinciding with the conference of the Association of International Education Administrators.

For over 75 years, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 400,000 participants — chosen for their academic merit and leadership qualities — with the opportunity to exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to challenges facing our communities and our world. Over 2,000 diverse U.S. students, artists and early career professionals in more than 100 different fields of study receive Fulbright U.S. Student Program grants annually to study, teach English and conduct research overseas.
