The Stony Brook University women’s and men’s lacrosse teams will each begin their respective, first-ever Colonial Athletic Association tournaments on a high note — the women by closing out yet another perfect regular season and the men by winning their season finale on the road against Long Island rival Hofstra.
The women’s team — ranked 10th in the nation in the Inside Lacrosse/IWLCA Division I Poll — also defeated Hofstra in its final regular-season game on April 28, winning 18-6 at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. The win secured the team’s first CAA regular-season title at 7-0, locked up the No. 1 seed in the CAA Tournament, and extended the Seawolves’ NCAA-leading conference winning streak to a remarkable 67 games.
Ellie Masera led the way with five goals and a career-high nine points while Kailyn Hart added four goals, with Morgan Mitchell completing a hat trick.
“I think it kind of just ended up in my stick, but it could’ve been Hart, it could’ve been anyone. I think something was clicking with me today, but our whole team was on point today and that is why we were so successful,” said Masera.
Stony Brook (12-3, 7-0) begins the CAA Tournament at noon on May 4 in Towson, Maryland against fourth-seeded Delaware. The game will be broadcast live on LacrosseTV.
The men’s team edged out Hofstra, 11-10, on April 29 to secure its first-ever CAA Tournament berth as the No. 3 seed. The Seawolves (8-6, 5-2) were led by Matt Anderson’s four goals, a career best. Jonathan Huber and Dylan Pallonetti each scored twice.
Stony Brook will face No. 2 Drexel in the CAA Tournament opener in Newark, Delaware on May 4 at 8:30 pm. The game will be broadcast live on LacrosseTV.
