President Stanley Presents SBU Memento to NYS Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie

President Stanley gives Speaker Heastie an article written about him when he was an SBU student.

When Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley met with New York State Assembly Speaker and Stony Brook alum Carl Heastie in Albany on March 17, he presented Speaker Heastie with a framed copy of an archived article written about him when he was a student reporter for Stony Brook’s Blackworld newspaper.

“Two very important points came true in the article since his graduation in 1990,” President Stanley said. “It states that upon graduation [Heastie] looked forward to the ‘opportunity to return something to the community in the form of community service,’ and he encouraged fellow graduates to ‘not forget our fellow students.’

“He followed through on his promises,” President Stanley continued. “His service to the community has awarded him one of the highest public service positions in the state and he remains active in student and alumni events on and off campus. Throughout his years in the Assembly, he continues to be a champion for the University and keenly understands our students’ needs.”

The President was in Albany to update the Speaker and other state legislators on Stony Brook University’s progress and discuss campus priorities as the Legislature negotiates next year’s budget.
