President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD welcomed Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director of UN Women and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, to deliver a timely and provocative Presidential Lecture on September 12, 2016.
“Stony Brook University is not only our partner in gender equality but a true pioneer in its own right in this area,” Mlambo-Ngcuka said. “There aren’t enough universities in the world that have put this issue at the center of their work.”
Ms. Mlambo-Ngcuka’s talk was followed by a lively discussion between her and President Stanley about achieving gender equality and defeating gender-based discrimination and violence on college campuses and across the globe.
The lecture was part of the University’s efforts on behalf of the UN’s gender equality initiative, HeForShe, which is helmed by Ms. Mlambo-Ngcuka.
