New “5 Questions” Videos Mark Mentoring Month

To mark National Mentoring Month, Stony Brook’s video series “5 Questions With …” is releasing four new video interviews highlighting the importance of mentoring in higher education and career success.
5 questionsPaleoanthropologist Meave Leakey, conservationist Carl Safina, social psychologist Amy Cuddy, and author Roger Rosenblatt are the four latest luminaries giving thoughtful, compelling interviews, featured on a browsable website as well as a Youtube playlist.
The ongoing series, part of the “In The Know” offerings created by SBU’s Office of Marketing and Communications,  spotlights the university’s role in global thought leadership. Interview subjects are affiliated with or have visited the campus for student and community enrichment events and activities.
“We are opening a window into the lives of successful professionals from diverse fields who have shared formative experiences, career discoveries and insights on how specific moments and experiences guided them along their path in life, and how college and career experiences enriched and shaped them,” said Nicholas Scibetta, Vice President for Communications and Marketing and Chief Communications Officer at Stony Brook.
Each of the luminaries interviewed relates the importance of mentoring to his or her education and career.
More on this month’s luminaries:

Amy Cuddy, Associate Professor at Harvard Business School, uses experimental methods to investigate how people judge and influence each other and themselves. Cuddy is the New York Times best-selling author of Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges.

Meave Leakey is Research Professor in Stony Brook University’s Department of Anthropology. She is also director of field research at the Turkana Basin Institute in Kenya, a unique nonprofit initiative co-founded by the Leakey family and Stony Brook to drive research at one of the best locations on Earth for studying the origins of humankind.

Roger Rosenblatt is Distinguished Professor of English and Writing at Stony Brook Southampton. Rosenblatt’s essays for Time magazine have won two George Polk awards, among others. His television essays for the NewsHour on PBS have won the Peabody and the Emmy. He is the author of six off-Broadway plays and 15 books, published in 13 languages.

Carl Safina is the inaugural holder of the Carl Safina Endowed Research Chair for Nature and Humanity at Stony Brook University and is the founder of The Safina Center. He also co-chairs the steering committee of the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at the University’s School of Journalism.
