Hitting a low score was the name of the game during the Stony Brook Alumni Association’s Scholarship Golf Classic on June 27, 2016, but when it came to raising dollars for scholarships, alumni, donors and University friends once again made it on the leaderboard.
The day’s events raised $111,000, topping the previous years’ totals for the fourth consecutive year.
Since its inception, the annual golf outing has funded $428,000 in student scholarships. During the past school year, 10 Alumni Association student awards, 13 Dean’s Choice awards, and two four-year, half-tuition scholarships were distributed thanks to funds raised by the Scholarship Golf Classic.
Kwabena Buscia ’17 — awarded the Joseph N. Campolo Award for Legal Studies — is one of the many award recipients who embody the dedication and hard work so often found in Stony Brook students. Having traveled from his native Ghana to attend Stony Brook in 2013, Buscia is a student leader who’s active on and off campus via University clubs, Long Island volunteer activities and summer internships. He explained that his scholarship awards not only help fill the income “gap” he and so many other students can experience when they choose to capitalize on leadership or volunteer positions, but the awards also motivate him to continue to pursue the next big idea. “Individuals who are able to give are in a position to inspire and motivate young ambitious students who are in need. They’re securing our future as a collective, because we are the future,” Buscia said.
“If we can provide just that little bit extra to help a student attend college, we will do it,” said Robert Stafford ’72, ’82, president of the Stony Brook Alumni Association. “As an alumnus, that’s important. We really want to help undergraduate and graduate students make an impact on the world — locally and globally — not only while they’re in school but long after their graduation.”
Anthony Casino, DDS ’78, chair of the Alumni Association’s Golf Committee, pointed out that the golf outing — aside from being the Alumni Association’s sole scholarship fundraising event for the year — is an opportunity for alumni to come together and rally around a cause. “These events help promote the development of Stony Brook’s culture of giving,” he said.
“We all know Stony Brook is an elite institution,” said Bedel Saget ’88, Alumni Association president-elect, “Now we need to continue to build a strong alumni base that can provide a network of support for the students who come after us.”
