Stony Brook is constantly searching for ways that we can create a welcoming environment for people from a growing array of backgrounds, cultures, identities, and experiences. Help us embrace our unique culture by telling us what words we should weave into the design by submitting your ideas by March 1.
The large-scale piece, which encompasses design themes supporting the LGBTQ+ community, is a mural commissioned by Stony Brook Campus Beautification Committee from a Stony Brook student.
- We want to know – what do you value?
- What specific words and phrases can you contribute to the project? (Keeping in mind SBU’s vision for diversity, equity, and inclusion)
The artist, alumna, and current graduate student Katie X (Xiaohui Wang) is a painter, photographer and mixed-media artist whose multicultural and interdisciplinary background allows her to draw inspiration from seemingly everywhere. For this project, she’s focused on themes that contribute to Stony Brook’s legacy of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Visitors can observe the artist in action as she paints the wall this spring. Work is underway, and the artist expects to complete the mural in June. Details for a ribbon cutting are to be determined. The final installation will be located just outside the entrance of West Side Dining, ensuring it’s visible from the corner of Circle Road and Campus Drive, two main thoroughfares for many navigating campus.
