Stony Brook Medicine has received a $150,000 gift from Stony Brook alumni Gloria Snyder ’72 and Mark Snyder ’69 of Belle Terre, NY, to establish the “Gloria and Mark Snyder Symposium” for Cancer Medicine, hosted by the Stony Brook University Cancer Center. Their gift will be matched as part of the Simons matching gift program, for a total impact of $300,000.
The Gloria and Mark Snyder Symposium will present emerging clinical practices and research findings that will keep Stony Brook faculty and staff at the forefront of cancer medicine and encourage clinical and research collaborations, according to the wishes of the donors.
The Snyders say they are proud to support the Stony Brook Cancer Center, a leader in clinical cancer care and research. “Mark and I understand the devastating impact cancer has on so many lives and are deeply committed to working with Stony Brook Medicine,” said Gloria. “We were glad to establish a symposium for cancer medicine to help encourage collaborations, education and discussions about new research, treatments and cures.”
The support of the Snyders and others is vital, as the annual incidence rate per 100,000 persons is higher in Suffolk County than both national and New York State rates. In Suffolk, the incidence rate is 524.5 out of 100,000, whereas in New York it is 485.7 and nationally it is 465. The Cancer Center serves more than 20,000 inpatient and outpatient visits annually and is now under the leadership of Dr. Yusuf A. Hannun, a renowned molecular biologist and physician-scientist investigating the molecular mechanisms of cancer.
As director of the Stony Brook Cancer Center, Dr. Hannun will oversee several multidisciplinary disease management teams for all types of cancers, and will be a key player in the Cancer Center achieving NCI Cancer Center designation.
“We are profoundly grateful for the generosity Gloria and Mark have shown Stony Brook and Cancer Medicine in particular,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, MACP, Senior Vice President for Health Sciences, Dean, School of Medicine. “Only with the support of our donors can we achieve our goal of excellence in all we do, and we are grateful to count the Snyders among our partners and friends.”
