Evolution in Motion: The Spring 2025 SBU Magazine Is Online Now!

Since its founding as a teachers college in 1957, Stony Brook University has evolved into one of the nation’s leading research institutions. Today, as New York’s flagship institution, it has made an indelible impact on the lives of more than 220,000 graduates — and counting.

The spring 2025 issue of Stony Brook University Magazine is now online. It examines the university’s continuing evolution and the lasting impact of our faculty, students, alumni and staff through their work and commitment to the Seawolves community.

Discover why Stony Brook’s alumni are unstoppable:

  • Kalin Sims ’15 has visited six continents, 54 countries and all 50 states. You would never know when speaking with her that before she studied at Stony Brook, she had never been on a plane. Learn more about Kalin’s journey over the past decade and why a recent trip back to Stony Brook was a full-circle moment for her.

  • Cassandra Skolnick ’22 gave up her high-profile job in banking to finish her undergraduate degree in her late 30s. Pushing aside her trepidation of being an older student, Cassandra fully immersed herself in campus life and her career in advocacy. Read more about Cassandra’s journey and who made her Stony Brook experience fulfilling.

  • Michele Balcom ’99 and Frank Fischer ’97 found the perfect atmosphere for success at Stony Brook — now they’re paying it forward by helping future students thrive. Discover how the couple is helping to Forecast a Bright Future for Seawolves.

And we are continuing our evolution with an updated look for the magazine and a new feature: Ask a Seawolf, in which Stony Brook staff and faculty share the best advice they’ve received.
