On April 11, she received the 2020 Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association Academic Excellence Award, which is given to a resident or fellow who has done outstanding work in research or other academic pursuits.
On May 12, Dr. Heslin received the 2021 RAMS Leadership in Emergency Medicine Award from the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine. This award is given to a medical student or practicing emergency medicine resident who has taken a leading role in their student interest group or residency program, and has made an impact on the local, regional, national or international level through their efforts in clinical and non-clinical arenas.
“Samita has made outstanding contributions to our research, educational and quality improvement endeavors. We are most pleased that she is joining our faculty on July 1,” said Dr. Mark Henry, Professor and Chair, Department of Emergency Medicine.

“Dr. Heslin is without question, one of our most productive, motivated and ambitious residents,” said Dr. Lauren Maloney, Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine. “Her clinical acumen and judgment are outstanding, her rapport with patients, family, and support staff is unparalleled, and most importantly, she treats her patients as a whole human, not just a medical diagnosis.”

In addition to her clinical responsibilities as a resident, Dr. Heslin created new residency quality assurance/quality improvement initiatives; designed and implemented a department-wide telehealth iPad program; designed and maintains a new department website; and created and ran innovative, interdisciplinary wellness initiatives for the residency program. Beyond this, she teaches and mentors medical students, has published several peer-reviewed publications, and is a member of several hospital committees.

Prior to coming to Stony Brook, Dr. Heslin graduated from Harvard University with a BA in Environmental Science and Public Policy and a MA in Earth and Planetary Science. She graduated from the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University in 2018 with a Scholarly Concentration in Research, while concurrently earning an MBA in Management and an MPH in Health Policy and Management. After graduating from her residency in Emergency Medicine this June, Dr. Heslin will join the Department of Emergency Medicine as a clinical assistant professor.
