Earthstock 2021 features a mix of in-person and virtual events this week, as the University kicks off its annual, weeklong celebration of Earth Day.
The keynote lecture, “Wild Long Island,”will be at 4 p.m. Friday, April 23, on Zoom. Christopher Paparo, manager of the Marine Sciences Center at Stony Brook Southampton, will talk about the fascinating wildlife that can be found on the land, in the air, and in the waters of Long Island.
Paparo has been exploring the wilds of Long Island for over 30 years. As the owner of Fish Guy Photos, he is a wildlife photographer, writer and lecturer who enjoys bringing public awareness to the diverse wildlife that calls Long Island home. He is also an award-winning member of the Outdoor Writers Association of America and the New York State Outdoor Writers Association, contributing to several fishing and wildlife publications.
In-person events are headlined by an on-campus tree planting on Wednesday, April 21, at noon in front of East Side Dining. “Diversity, Our Beauty Among the Branches,” is presented by the Office of Administration and Finance and will feature the planting of a Diversity Tree “rooted in celebration of inclusivity, equity, and care for one another and the environment.” Complimentary food and music will be provided.
Other live events include Earth Day Craft Night on Thursday, April 22 in the Student Union ballroom; “Bee Movie” on the Staller Steps on Friday, April 23; a nature walk through the Ashley Schiff Preserve on Saturday, April 24; and the “Tye Dye @ Holi Festival” Saturday, April 24 on the Staller Steps. A small exhibitor fair will be held Thursday, April 22 from 1-3 p.m. on the Academic Mall. Other virtual events will take place online throughout the week.
