Celia Marshik has been named as dean of the Graduate School and vice provost for Graduate and Professional Education at Stony Brook University.
Provost and Executive Vice President Carl Lejuez announced the appointment in an email to the Stony Brook community. Marshik has served as interim in the role since May 2022.
“Dr. Marshik has been extremely effective in building a compelling vision for graduate education and post-doctoral support at Stony Brook,” Lejuez said. “I am thrilled that she will continue in this leadership role.”
As interim dean and vice provost, Marshik has rebuilt Graduate School staffing, working closely with the Provost’s Office to target critical hires needed to support academic program, student and post-doctoral scholar needs. She strengthened partnerships between graduate program leaders and academic support units to enhance support around admissions, recruiting and retention. She has also worked closely with the Graduate Council to help shorten the approval time for programs. And she has enhanced outreach from the Graduate School to the university, through events such as a new “Conversations in Graduate Education” speaker series and revamped graduate program directors and coordinators retreats.
“I’m delighted to assume leadership of the Graduate School on a permanent basis,” Marshik said. “During my year as interim, I’ve been impressed by the dedication of our faculty and staff to their graduate programs, and I’m continuously inspired by the range of innovative and creative work done by our graduate students and post-doctoral scholars. I couldn’t be more pleased to continue working with the staff of the Graduate School to serve the campus.”
Marshik has been a member of the Stony Brook faculty since 2001 and has served in a number of administrative and service roles, many of which focused on graduate education. She was chair of the Department of English from 2014 through 2020 and, previously, graduate program director for the department. She received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Service by a Graduate Program Director in 2010. Moreover, she is widely published in the field of modernist studies and was president of the Modernist Studies Association while department chair.
In his message, Provost Lejuez thanked the search committee for their leadership of the search process. The search committee was co-chaired by Shari Miller, dean of the School of Social Welfare, and Paul Shepson, dean of the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. Committee members included faculty, staff of the Graduate School and graduate programs, leadership of selected university divisions, and graduate students.
