To provide transformative healthcare requires transformative leadership.

In this edition of Medicine Today, we highlight two transformational leaders for Stony Brook Medicine: Latha Chandran, MD, MPH, who was recently named the inaugural Miriam and David Donoho Distinguished Teaching Professor in the School of Medicine, and Margaret McGovern, MD, PhD, a nationally renowned clinical geneticist and Physician-in-Chief for Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, who has been named the inaugural Knapp Chair in Pediatrics at Stony Brook Children’s.

Transformational leadership is also required in the realm of philanthropy. And in that regard, Stony Brook Children’s has benefited from the Stony Brook Children’s Hospital Task Force and two incredible gifts that helped us reach our $25 million fundraising goal for a new children’s hospital.

The first gift was led by an anonymous donor. The second gift was brought about via the Knapp Swezey Foundation. Thanks to both of these matching gifts, along with the Task Force’s leadership and individual donors, $25 million was raised in support of the $72 million Stony Brook Children’s expansion, which will be completed in 2018. Their efforts are highlighted here as well.

Finally, we focus on transformative leadership in the research realm.

Two Stony Brook University cell biologists, David Matus, PhD, and Benjamin Martin, PhD, have discovered that cell division and invasion are mutually exclusive behaviors. For this novel finding, they received the 2017 Damon Runyon-Rachleff Innovation Award and a two-year grant of $300,000, followed by another renewable grant of $300,000 for an additional two years to further advance their work. This recognition and funding comes courtesy of the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation.

Together through these efforts and more, we are transforming Stony Brook Medicine and taking healthcare to higher levels for Long Island and beyond.
